Welcome to the blogosphere from a New Zealander on the swim team at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. I'll try and keep this updated with pictures, results and thoughts from a kiwi living in the states, and the ice.

PFD
October 3rd was pay day. PFD stands for Permanent Fund Dividend. Alaskan residents, as part of the Alaskan constitution, receive a pay out for the oil. Since about 1982 all residents of the state have received between $2069 and $331 (as long as they don't commit a crime and stay out of jail). The average is about $1000 and this year it was $900. So this week the shops are a bit empty as you can imagine. Think of a family of 5 just got $4500.
